The rocking chair was first invented in the 18th century and it has provided millions of people a higher level of relaxation since then. Rocking chairs are pieces of furniture that defy the usual function of a chair. These chairs have legs that are poised over curved pieces of wood which makes it possible for the chair to sway forwards and backwards, setting the one sitting on it in a gentle rocking motion. Rocking chairs provide comfort that is beyond what is usually offered by traditional chairs or seats. The rocking of a rocking chair can provide relaxation and a whole new dimension of comfort for you and your family.
The origin of the rocking chair is unknown but the first ones we do know of originated in England in the early 1700's and were made near Windsor Castle in Berkshire (which lies about a 20 minute drive away from Heathrow Airport) hence the name 'Windsor Rocker'. In all probability it came about through watching the therapeutic effect of gently rocking a baby in it's cradle, so why not do the same for adults? England was not the only country to have the rocker at that time, Sweden had another form around 1740 called the 'Gungstol', which just means rocking chair. These originally had 6 legs and were traditionally painted black with gold outlines. A four legged version became popular in the 1800's
For anyone who is a parent or just likes to pass time on the porch, a rocking chair is a must. The swaying back and forth can be so soothing that it will literally put a person to sleep. That's why many expecting mommies will purchase a rocking chair. During last night feedings or disturbances, rocking the child will calm them and they will eventually fall right to sleep. Within minutes, most children will calm down thanks to the motion of a rocking chair. It is definitely a nursery must.
